Minor Champions
Newport overcame Kilruane in an entertaining and good quality North Tipp minor hurling ‘A’ final under lights in Borrisileigh on Wednesday evening. The game was in the balance until a Harry Noone goal, following a good passing movement, midway through the second half tilted the game in Newport’s favour and they went on to build up an impressive final score of 1-20 to 0-13. This was Newport’s first hurling title at Under 18 ‘A’ level in a century, having won their first crown in 1926 – (they also won a title as an amalgamation with Ballinahinch in 2014). Incidentally, Newport wore Black and Amber colours in the 1926 final which was played against Kiladangan in Capparoe. Well done to the players and management on marking this centenary event in a fitting manner.
