Newport got off to the better start and held a four points to one lead after 10 minutes, through the efforts of Cillian Collins from frees and Charlie Tobin. However at the quarter hour mark the scores were level when Brian O’Meara rattled the net. - Iomáint Faoi 21Newport qualified for the semi-final of the North Tipp Under 21 ‘B’ hurling championship by virtue of a hard-earned victory over Moneygall/Clonakenny on Sunday. Underfoot conditions were difficult at Lacken Park following heavy overnight rain and again shortly before throw-in, but the teams served up a very competitive and engaging contest. Newport settled more quickly and established early control, moving into a 0-5 to 0-1 lead by the twelfth minute. A 20th minute Charlie Tobin goal further strengthened their position, helping them to open an eight-point advantage approaching half time. - CómhbhrónMembers of CLG Tulach Sheasta and of the local community were saddened to hear of the passing last week of Jim Coffey, Cragg, Newport. Jim was one of the few to have played with both Mulcair Rovers and Newport and to serve on the committee of both clubs. Having lined out with the Cragg-based club before its demise, he then went on to play hurling and football with Newport in the 1960s. He won North Tipp and County junior football medals in 1965. He was a member of the club committee during the 1970s and ‘80s and was nominated by…
