Joe Brennan R.I.P.
GLG Tulach Sheasta extends sincere sympathy to the Brennan family on the sad passing of Joe Brennan of Clonbealy and formerly from the Glen of Aherlow. When Joe, his wife Helen and family of 8 children settled in Newport in 1977, he immediately became involved in local community activities. The Community Council, Hall Committee and School Boards of Management benefitted from his expertise and guidance, but it was the local GAA Club which became the focal point of his life, as Joe and his family became immersed in activities on and off the field.
After a three-year term as Chairman of the Juvenile Club, Joe graduated to the senior Chair in 1983. During his five years at the helm, he led the club’s activities during Centenary Year, oversaw the publication of the club history, initiated many developments at Lacken Park and was instrumental in introducing the FÁS Scheme under which the buildings in the Longhouse and the Park were constructed. A four-year stint as Treasurer followed, with Joe’s customary diligence ensuring that the club finances were in perfect order. Being never short of words, Joe fronted many of the club’s public functions, while his manual ability and technical skills helped solve many mechanical issues which arose. He was the club delegate to the North Board for many years during the 1980s and 90s, was elected Vice-Chairman of the Board in 1985 and also served on the County Appeals Committee.
His last role with the club was as caretaker between 2006 and 2011. Joe’s five sons all wore the Newport jersey in various grades of hurling and football and played important roles as club administrators. Joe Brennan was made an honorary life member of Newport GAA Club at the end of 2011, and in 2015 he was presented with a Laoch Sean-Gael award by Tipperary GAA in recognition of his services to Cumann Lúthchleas Gael over three and a half decades.
Joe Brennan has left a legacy of service, community involvement, family commitment and a strong work ethic. His outgoing disposition and friendly nature will be missed by all who knew him. Déanaimid cómhbhrón le Helen agus lena chlann go léir. Suaimhneas síoraí dá anam uasal.
