Newport qualified for the semi-final of the North Tipp Under 21 ‘B’ hurling championship by virtue of a hard-earned victory over Moneygall/Clonakenny on Sunday. Underfoot conditions were difficult at Lacken Park following heavy overnight rain and again shortly before throw-in, but the teams served up a very competitive and engaging contest. Newport settled more quickly and established early control, moving into a 0-5 to 0-1 lead by the twelfth minute. A 20th minute Charlie Tobin goal further strengthened their position, helping them to open an eight-point advantage approaching half time. Two late pointed frees for Moneygall/Clonakenny narrowed the gap leaving Newport 1-10 to 0-7 ahead at the interval. The home side maintained that lead for most of the second half, though Moneygall/Clonakenny continued to battle and pushed hard in the closing stages as they chased goals. Newport’s defence withstood sustained pressure until the 29th minute when Cian Ryan struck for a goal, that set up a tense finish. The visitors had one final opportunity from a ’65 but Newport cleared their lines to secure the three point victory. Moneygall/Clonakenny will look back on several missed opportunities, particularly from frees. The final whistle saw the score standing at Newport 1-16 Moneygall/Clonakenny 1-13. Among the standout performers were Eoin Doughan who contributed 0-9 (7 from placed balls) for the visitors, with good support from midfielder Shay Gleeson. Cillian Collins registered 0-8 (6 placed balls) for Newport. Callum Poole (0-2) was a constant livewire. Charlie Tobin helped himself to 1-2 and Lee Ryan scored 0-3. Darragh Meaney was most prominent in defence.
Best of luck to the boys who take on Kilruane MacDonaghs in the North U21B Semi-final on Sunday next, the 30th November at 12.00 in Cloughjordan. All support is appreciated.
