Newport’s Under 21 hurlers got their campaign off to a good start with a comprehensive victory over Lorrha Rovers on Sunday in Lacken Park. The visitors got off to the better start with two early points on the board within two minutes, but once James Moloney finished to the net in the sixth minute, Newport were into their rhythm. A tenth minute goal from Charlie Tobin and another green flag from Lee Ryan ten minutes later had them in complete control, with the score standing at 3-10 to 0-7. Second half goals from Charlie Tobin, Brian Tobin and Jack McCarthy put the icing on the cake. In reality, goals were the difference, as Lorrha were not inferior in general play, as they picked off some excellent points. However, they were over-reliant on Kennedy and O’Meara for scores and when they did get through the defence they found Ryan Shinners in good form between the posts. Cillian Collins was in good scoring form for Newport with 0-13 (7 from placed balls), while the Tobin brothers shared 3-8 between them. Final Score: Newport 6-24 Lorrha Rovers 0-17. Lorrha Rovers next face Portroe, while Newport will travel to play the latter in two weeks time.
