David Egan R.I.P.
CLG Tulach Sheasta extends sympathy to the Egan family on the passing of David Egan, Pound Street, Newport. Davy Egan was a regular on Newport teams from the early 1950s. He was part of the Intermediate Hurling panel which won the North Tipp Championship Final in 1954, but lost following an objection. He won a County Junior Hurling medal in 1957. His passing leaves just two survivors of that team which brought the first county hurling title to Newport. Davy continued to be involved with Newport senior hurling and junior football teams up to the mid 60s. He also served on the Club Committee in the early 60s. In recent decades, Davy was a familiar figure on his tractor or walking his dogs around Newport and will be remembered as a valued member of Mulcair Men’s Shed and regularly sang with their choir. He served many of the clubs of the parish in his role as supervisor of the Fás Community Employment Scheme in the 1990s. His quiet, unassuming nature, his words of wisdom and his contribution to local community life will be treasured by all who knew him. Davy’s sons carried on the family tradition of involvement in sport, a trait continued by the current generation of young Egans.
