Michael Ryan (Cregaun) R.I.P.

CLG Tulach Sheasta extends sincere sympathy to the bereaved on the death of Michael Ryan (Cregaun), The Square, Newport. Mick won a County Junior Hurling championship medal with Newport in 1957, having been called up to the team for the county semi-final and final, even though still short of his seventeenth birthday. He contributed handsomely to the county victory, including getting his name on the scoresheet from his midfield position. His passing leaves just one surviving member of that Newport team which brought the first county hurling title to the parish. Having missed out on much of the sixties, through a combination of injury and work commitments, he returned to the fold at the end of the decade and was part of a full forward line which scored 10-11 in a county senior hurling championship game in 1969. He was renowned for his forceful and fearless play and for his physical fitness. Mick Ryan served on the club committee in the early 70s and acted as trainer/selector in the early 90s. 
Mick Ryan was often known as “Young Mick” to distinguish him from his father, also Mick, who won North Tipp Junior and Senior hurling medals with Newport, an All Ireland Junior Hurling medal with Tipperary in 1926 and assisted the county in the league campaign of 1927. Having transferred to Limerick after 1932, he won two All Ireland senior hurling and three National League medals, along with six county championship titles with Ahane.
