Members of CLG Tulach Sheasta and of the local community were saddened to hear of the passing last week of Jim Coffey, Cragg, Newport. Jim was one of the few to have played with both Mulcair Rovers and Newport and to serve on the committee of both clubs. Having lined out with the Cragg-based club before its demise, he then went on to play hurling and football with Newport in the 1960s. He won North Tipp and County junior football medals in 1965. He was a member of the club committee during the 1970s and ‘80s and was nominated by the club as a trustee of the Longhouse Field in 1987. Jim’s family have been actively involved in games and Scór activities over the years. Jim had a broad interest in many sports and attended numerous games at local and representative level. He particularly enjoyed watching his grandson win county medals in hurling and football over the past two years. Jim Coffey was a popular and highly respected member of the local community. His wit, jovial disposition and roguish nature will be missed by all who knew him.
