Iomáint Faoi 21: Newport booked their place in the knock-out stages of the North Tipp Under 21 ‘B’ hurling championship following their second high-scoring victory in Portroe on Sunday. A Matt Madden goal in the 8th minute kept Portroe in touch, but Newport kept tagging on the points and after Callum Poole fired to the net after 24 minutes they stretched out to a 1-13 to 1-6 lead at the interval. Another green flag from Cillian Collins following a great run by Shane Flanagan straight from the throw-in and a further goal from Flanagan himself 3 minutes later put the game to bed. Charlie Tobin hit a fourth goal on the 20 minute mark as Newport continued to put over points at will. They had 8 scorers on the board with Cillian Collins accounting for 1-10 (5f), Brian Tobin 0-7 and Charlie Tobin 1-4. Callum Poole stood out for his industry and use of the ball. Portroe were dependent on Matt Madden for scores. He registered all of his side’s scores, including 3 line balls and 6 frees.
Peil Faoi 17: Best of luck to our U17A footballers on Saturday 8th November in the North Semi final V Nenagh in Ballina at 15.00. All support welcome.
Cómhbhrón: We extend sympathy to the following families on recent bereavements:
The Gleeson family, Birdhill, on the death of Tommy Gleeson, Cratloe and formerly of Birdhill. Tommy played juvenile hurling and football with Newport in the 1960s;
The English family, Newport on the passing of Nicky, who lined out with Newport football teams in the 1970s.
