Under 17 League Champions
Newport’s Under 17 Footballers played Cahir on Monday evening in Littleton in the final of the County Division 2 Football League. In a see-saw battle both sides enjoyed periods of supremacy, but were guilty of poor shooting and careless use of possession. After a slow start, Newport got into some rhythm and were level at the interval when the scores stood at 1-2 to 0-5, the goal coming from Kevin Fitzpatrick. A Cormac Shanahan goal soon after the resumption seemed to leave Newport in control, but they gave away a goal through a defensive error with five minutes remaining and the game ended at 2-6 to 1-9. Extra time continued with the same trend, Newport taking the lead with a goal from Ollie Roche and holding a 3-8 to 0-10 lead at the break. However, a defensive lapse let Cahir in for a green flag midway through the second period of ET. Cahir drew level (3-9 to 2-12) with time running out and officials decided that a ‘Golden Score’ would determine the outcome. Oisin Kennedy gained possession from the restart and Newport cleverly worked the ball into position for Cormac Shanahan to fist the winning point. Final Score: Newport 3-10 Cahir 2-12.
Big congratulations also to Cormac Shanahan who started for Tipperary on May 24th in the Celtic Challenge semi-final v Kilkenny. Tipperary won and now move on to the final v Cork in two weeks time. Well done Cormac.
