Ger Carey: Members of CLG Tulach Sheasta and the entire local community were saddened to learn of the recent passing of Ger Carey at Milford Care Centre after a prolonged illness. Ger was a stalwart of Newport GAA over five decades. When he first arrived into Lacken Park in the late ‘60s, it was obvious that Ger was something special. His skill, long striking and indefatigable energy made him stand out among his peers. His years in juvenile grades during the 1970s were barren ones with little by way of trophies coming to teams with which he played, but he was later to go on to win North, County, Munster and All-Ireland honours with Newport and Tipperary. The crowning glory was in 1989 when he won an All-Ireland Junior Hurling medal with Tipperary. He added another All-Ireland in 2000 as part of the Masters’ team. Ger played Senior, Intermediate, Junior (A) and Junior (B) hurling with Newport, while also togging out in all four grades of football until he hung up the boots in 2003. He won North I.H. titles in 1988 and ’89, County I.H in 1989, North S.F. in 1982 and was part of the team which won the North S.H. championship in 1996. In recognition of his ability and contribution on the hurling field, he was selected as a midfielder on the Newport Millennium team in 2000. Ger was a member of the club committee and served as secretary in 1989. Ger Carey will be remembered by his teammates as a stylish hurler, a jovial character, a loyal comrade.
