- Michael Ryan (Cregaun) R.I.P.CLG Tulach Sheasta extends sincere sympathy to the bereaved on the death of Michael Ryan (Cregaun), The Square, Newport. Mick won a County Junior Hurling championship medal with Newport in 1957, having been called up to the team for the county semi-final and final, even though still short of his seventeenth birthday. He contributed handsomely to the county victory, including getting his name on the scoresheet from his midfield position. His passing leaves just one surviving member of that Newport team which brought the first county hurling title to the parish. Having missed out on much of the sixties, through…
- Catherine Shanahan R.I.P.CLG Tulach Sheasta extends sympathy to the Shanahan family, Ballymackeogh, on the death of Kitty, mother of former Newport senior and intermediate hurler, Mike, and grandmother of current minor player, Cormac. Kitty’s uncle, Dan Troy, could be said to be the first Newport player to win an All Ireland when he helped Limerick to win the national senior hurling title in 1918, having previously played at juvenile and adult grades with Newport, while living in his native Ballymackeogh and before transferring to Claughaun.
